NEC Corp. and Tellium Inc. has announced the development of what they claim to be the industry's first commercially-available multi-vendor integrated transport-switch designed to simplify wavelength networks by eliminating redundant electronic components.

The system combines Tellium's Aurora optical transceiver and NEC's SpectralWave DWDM transponder into a footprint that is 50 percent smaller than compared to traditional multi-vendor equipment.

The smaller footprint translates to six instead of 12 bays of equipment and is claimed to require less than half the power required by other multi-vendor equipment.

The Aurora optical transceiver comes with the company's StarNet wavelength management system (WMS), while the NEC transponder is integrated with their SpectralWave network management system (NMS). They are integrated via a standard TMF 513/814 northbound interface from Tellium's WMS to the NEC NMS.
