Alcatel has officially launched its foreign-invested telecommunications company in China, Alcatel Shanghai Bell. Through Shanghai Bell, Alcatel has completed the integration of its key operations in China. The integration is the result of a MOU signed in October 2001 between China's Ministry of Information Industry and Alcatel.

Shanghai Bell is expected to have $2 billion in sales in its first year of operations and over $1 billion in exports within the first three years with a sales force of more than 1,500 people located in most provinces in China.

As an integrated company, Shanghai Bell will have full access to Alcatel's worldwide technology pool. This will enable the company to offer the portfolio of global telecom technologies to its customers locally, backed by Alcatel's manufacturing base and sales and support network. Additionally, Alcatel will invest in the R&D efforts of Shanghai Bell.

"Shanghai Bell is one of a kind in China being the only telecom supplier that is ready to meet the global needs of customers in China with the latest end-to-end solutions. This is part of our strong belief that China is well on the way to becoming the world's most important telecom market, and validates all our partnerships and investments in China to date," said Tchuruk.
