IR LDO regulator halves system footprint

The IRU1120 adjustable LDO linear voltage regulator from International Rectifier achieves stability by using ceramic capacitors to lower the system cost and reduce the system footprint by up to 50 percent.

Designed for use in ADSL and cable modems, graphic cards, desktop PCs, HDDs, and on-board dc/dc converters, the 2A device accepts a maximum input of 10V and produces an adjustable output between 1.25V to 5.5V.

The regulator uses ceramic capacitors with capacitance values down to 4.75F to achieve stability. The capacitors' low ESR also offers low-noise power supply operation and improves load transient response required in microprocessors and ASIC power supplies.

When used in applications where dual supplies are available, the IRU1120 provides 1.1V drop-out at 2A load by providing a higher voltage to the control pin than the input supply voltage.

For single supply applications, the IRU1120 is used as a standard LDO regulator with 1.3V drop-out by connecting the input supply voltage and control pins together.

The regulator is shipped in a 5-pin UltraThin-Pak surface-mount package and provides internal current limit and thermal shutdown circuits.

Pricing starts at 77 cents each in 10,000-unit quantities.
