STMicroelectronics, a supplier of silicon chips for set-top boxes (STBs), will be supplying chips for next-generation low-cost STBs that will allow consumers in the UK to receive free digital terrestrial TV receiver on their analog TV receivers.

The services available in these STBs include digital versions of the existing analog channels, additional free digital channels and enhanced services such as digital teletext and electronic program guide. These STBs are set to be launched by several OEMs in the coming months.

To help equipment manufacturers meet their cost targets, STMicroelectronics designers have developed a concept known as the digital converter box (DCB) or "digital brick." This is a complete reference design, offered with full design support, including circuit schematics, PCB layout and free core software OEMs can use immediately or adapt to meet particular requirements. Key devices in the DCB include the STV0360 terrestrial demodulator and the STi5518, a member of the OMEGA family of STB decoders that is used in the majority of STB designs worldwide.

In addition to the free core software, STMicroelectronics has also enlisted the support of third parties to develop additional software such as GUI. These software suites ensure the optimum implementation of features such as digital teletext and interactive services.
