Motorola ships ac motor controller

Motorola Inc.'s Semiconductor Products Sector has announced the development of the MC3PHAC motor control unit suitable for use in pre-programmed, variable speed, three-phase ac motors in industrial, automotive, and home applications.

The controller answers the trend set by manufacturers of replacing traditional analog relay circuitry with semiconductors to control the electronic or mechanical components that determines the speed, position, and torque of the motor.

"Across industries, manufacturers are finding that digitally controlling motors has the benefit of enhancing motor performance, reducing power consumption and increasing motor life," said Paul Grimme, corporate VP and GM of Motorola's 8-/16-bit Microcontroller Division.

The MC3PHAC device is a monolithic intelligent motor control unit that contains all the active functions required to implement the control portion of an open loop, three phase AC motor. It has V/Hz speed control, DSP filtering, and dynamic bus ripple cancellation to reduce motor noise and improve precision.

Configurable for standalone or hosted operation, also performs three-phase waveform generation, selectable PWM polarity, selectable base speed (50Hz/60Hz), and performs up to 32-bit internal calculations. The MC3PHAC also has an Internet-enabled system to allow for remote operation.
