The LTC1704 dual output dc/dc converter from Linear Technology Corp. integrates a step-down synchronous controller and an LDO controller into a 16-lead SSOP casing, and is suitable for use in noise-sensitive telecom systems, test equipment, and imaging systems.

The IC operates from an input supply ranging from 3.15V to 5.5V. The ability to operate from 3.3V eliminates the need for a 5V auxiliary supply and associated components such as filters, inductors and capacitors, thereby reducing the overall cost.

The linear regulator controller provides the second output that drives an external NPN transistor delivering up to 2.5A of load current.

Operating at 550kHz, the LTC1704 drives a pair of n-channel MOSFETs in a voltage mode, synchronous buck configuration to provide the main supply. The IC also features automatic transition to burst mode operation at light loads.

The chip provides a dc accuracy >1.5 percent at its switcher output and 2 percent at its linear regulator output.

The LTC1704 operates from -400C to 850C, and is priced at $4.10 each in 1,000-unit quantities.
