RCD Components Inc. says it has the industry's smallest surface-mount inductor in a 0201-size package. Measuring 0.56-by-0.28mm, the MHI-0201 multilayer, HF inductor is said to be one-fourth the size of the prior smallest chip inductor.

The 0201 chip inductor was developed to meet the needs of OEMs faced with shrinking board space and increased operating frequencies, said the company. Key portable communication applications include cell phones, WLAN, PCMCIA and RF gear, and handheld systems such as pagers, laptops and palmtops.

The MHI-0201 offers an inductance range of 0.6nH to 15nH. An extended inductance range of up to 30nH is expected to be available by July, said the company. The operating temperature range is -250C to 1050C. Standard tolerances are 15 percent, 110 percent, and 120 percent.

Pricing for the chip inductors starts at 10 cents each in quantities of 10,000. Lead time is from stock to eight weeks.
