Toppoly Optoelectronics Corp. has begun the pilot run for its Fab 1 facility, which produces low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) TFT-LCDs. Mass production is scheduled to commence next month. The plant includes 3.5G equipment with a monthly capacity of 75,000 units of 620-by-750mm glass substrates.

According to the company, the product is available in 1.5-inch, 2.2-inch, and 14-1-inch models. These displays can be employed in digital still camera and mobile phone applications. Its 3.5-inch models designed for use in PDAs and 7-inch wide VGA panels for automobile GPS will be introduced at the end of this year. Ray Chen, chairman, said, "Our yield rate for small-and medium-sized LTPS TFT-LCD panels is anticipated to reach 75 percent this yearend."

Toppoly possess in-house design capabilities for pixel/arrays, integrated drivers, optical devices, and interface electronics modules. The company also provides substrates for next-generation active-matrix LCDs and OLEDs.

In addition, the company will invest $1.76 million to construct Fab 2. The plant will employ 5G equipment for the manufacture of large-sized LTPS TFT-LCD panels with a dimension of 1.1-by-1.25m.

Chen noted, "Our targeted turnover in 2007 is $3.52 billion. Toppoly invested a total of $1.47 billion in Fab 1, including the offshore factory in Nanjing. Construction at Nanjing is scheduled to be completed in November 2002. Pilot run is set to begin early next year."
