International Components Corp. (ICC) has expanded their line of safety circuits for Li-ion batteries, enabling increased flexibility.

Li-ion batteries are said to provide greater run time and energy density than earlier battery designs such as NiCd. This factor makes Li-ion batteries suitable for laptop computers, cell phones, digital cameras, PDAs, CD players and other portable devices.

With the added energy density of Li-ion comes the need to monitor critical battery criteria to prevent damage to the cell. ICC safety circuits sense cell voltages and discharge currents and provide a means to measure cell temperature. They are also designed to shut off the battery pack in order to prevent the cells from overcharging or from getting over-discharged.
