Cast JPEG cores achieve >70MSa/s

Cast Inc. has released its new JPEG encoder and decoder cores that achieve a sampling rate of >70MSa/s for fast FPGA families, making them suitable for use in cost-effective motion JPEG applications such as digital camcorders, video conferencing system, and surveillance systems.

The JPEG_Fast_E encoder and JPEG_Fast_D decoder cores also achieve a sampling rate of 55MSa/s when implemented in Xilinx's Virtex-6 FPGA and are claimed by the company to attain a faster sampling rate when implemented in ASICs.

The cores offer baseline compliance with the ISO/IEC 10918-1 JPEG standard and support all the defined JPEG data formats and possible scan configurations. They handle image sizes up to 64-by-64KB and feature four stream-defined Huffman and Quantization tables.

The designs are programmable, fully-synchronous, and provide complete stand-alone operation with minimum memory requirements.

The JPEG cores are available in HDL form for ASIC synthesis or Altera or Xilinx's devices.
