A 10Gbps multiprotocol ASIC that was previously available only in a module from Network Elements Inc. is now available as a standalone device. The LiASIC targets 10 Gigabit Ethernet LAN and WAN, 10Gbps Packet-over-Sonet, and 10Gbps SONET/SDH optical networking applications.

With a sub-7W power dissipation, the LiASIC features configurable protocol termination for 10Gbit Ethernet, OC-192c PoS, and OC-192c Sonet systems. It includes an Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) System Packet Interface 4 (SPI-4) phase 2 interface for transferring system-side packets, and an OIF SFI-4/802.3ae/XSBI for connecting to physical-layer modules.

It also has an 802.3ae XGMII for connecting to personal communication system and physical-medium-dependent modules, as well as a 16-bit control interface.

The part performs MAC, PCS, and wireless Internet service processing as well as statistics monitoring and programmable packet filtering. In PoS mode, it provides packet statistics monitoring, programmable packet filtering, point-to-point-based/high-level data link control encapsulation, PoS mapping and Sonet framing.

In SONET-only modes, the ASIC provides SONET OC-192 section and line overhead termination, along with path processing and raw mapping for OC-192c. Protocol processing features and modes can be controlled on the fly, thus allowing the device to be used as a standalone monitoring MAC, a 10G Base R MAC/PHY or a 10G Base W MAC/PHY.

The standalone LiASIC is priced at $500 in high volumes.

The company has also introduced a 40km module, the MiniPHY-300, for 10Gbps SONET/SDH, 10Gb Ethernet LAN, WAN and MAN, DWDM, resilient packet ring, and multiprotocol label switching applications.

It is said to reduce board space up to 50 percent compared with alternative 300-pin modules. It will debut in the third quarter at $5,000.
