Ericsson Microelectronics has announced the availability of the PBA31603 RF power amplifier (PA) module that measures 10-by-8-by-1.5mm and is targeted for use in dual-, triple-, or quad-band GSM handsets.

The module includes an internal 50-ohm matching circuitry and an amplifier each for the GSM850/900 and DCS1800/PCS1900 bands.

The device operates from a single 3.5V power supply and produces an output of 31.5dBm for GSM850, 35dBm for GSM900, and 32.5dBm for both DCS1800 and PCS1900. Power added efficiency in each band is 40 percent, 55 percent, 50 percent, and 45 percent, respectively.

The company also claims that the module achieves up to 50 percent duty cycle without performance degradation making it suitable for GPRS multislot uplink applications.

The PBA31603 draws <105A during powerdown mode and uses an analog ramp signal to control power output, while a logic input is used for band switching.
