RF Micro Devices Inc. has announced the availability of the RF8000 plug-and-play, 12-parallel channel GPS receiver module, designed for assets tracking, telematics, and automotive navigation products.

The device uses a rapid acquisition module to achieve a more accurate and faster time to first fix and signal reacquisition. "This is our first GPS receiver to include novel, baseband DSP logic, which aids the signal acquisition and re-acquisition process as well as enhances overall GPS functionality," adds Richard Najarian, director of mobile applications products at RF Micro Devices.

The 38-by-38mm module is capable of 3D and 2D navigation modes and features a SiGe-based RF front end that provides a sensitivity of -113dBm. It operates from a 3.3V source (2.5V battery backup mode) and consumes 475mW.

The RF8000 is priced at $40 in quantities of 10,000 units. The company is also offering a GPS evaluation kit, which includes a GPS evaluation unit, an active GPS antenna, power/PC cables, evaluation software and full documentation.
