Samsung Corning begins pilot production of GaN wafers

Samsung Corning Co. Ltd has commenced pilot production of GaN wafers in its Suwon, South Korea, plant. According to the company, the products will be used as a key material for blue laser diodes, which will serve as a light source in next-generation high-density DVDs.

Yong-ro Song, president of Samsung Corning, said, "Right now, we have no plans of carrying mass production. The pilot production is anticipated to secure the company's position in the global market. Samsung Corning anticipates wafer business revenues to reach 100 won billion ($82.35 million at $1:1,214.40 won) by year 2005.

In addition, Samsung Corning entered into a five-year agreement with Samsung Advanced Institute for the R&D of GaN wafers.
