NEC DSP handles MPEG4 processing

NEC Corp. has announced the development of the SPXK5 DSP core designed to handle MPEG4 codec processing of A/V in portable devices such as cell phones, PDAs, and digital video cameras.

Employing a four-way parallel VLIW and dual MAC architecture, the DSP is claimed by the company to improve the signal processing speed by three times compared with cores that use conventional architectures.

The four-way parallel VLIW architecture allows up to four instructions (such as operation, load, store, and branch instructions) to be stored in a single instruction word and executed simultaneously.

The dual MAC architecture increases the efficiency of DSP algorithms because two multiply-accumulate operations can be executed simultaneously.

Manufactured using the company's 0.135m CMOS process, the DSP operates from 0.9V to 1.65V and processes up to 1,000MIPS (250MHz). It dissipates 0.05mW/MIPS at 0.9V and 0.15mW/MIPS at 1.5V.
