EM Micro ships lithium battery protection module

EM Microelectronic has introduced the Panther lithium battery protection module that improves the operating life of one-cell rechargeable battery packs without additional external components.

Designed for use in Li-ion and lithium polymer batteries in portable devices, the module consist of the company's EM6180 lithium battery protection chip and low-resistance power MOS switches. It features continuous battery voltage and current monitoring, trimmed charge and discharge voltage limits, and short-circuit protection.

The module also features temperature-dependent charge/discharge current limit detection and uses nickel tabs to enable quick and direct connection to cells by spot or ultrasonic welding.

The Panther module is priced at <$2 each in volume quantities.
