Linear Tech MOSFET controller acts as ideal diode

Linear Technology Corp. has announced the availability of the LTC4412 PowerPath controller that controls an external p-channel MOSFET to create a near ideal diode function for power switchover or load sharing.

The 6-pin ThinSOT device operates from 2.5V to 28V, making it suitable for use with one to six Li-ion batteries or most ac/dc adapters. Its internal gate driver includes an internal voltage clamp for MOSFET protection and offers a quiescent current of 11mA that is independent of load current.

When conducting, the voltage drop across the MOSFET is placed at 10mVlower than the traditional exponential curve of a comparable Schottky diodepermitting efficient ORing of multiple power sources to extend battery life.

For applications with a wall adapter or other auxiliary power source, the load is automatically disconnected from the battery when the auxiliary source is connected.

The company claims that two or more LTC4412 devices can be interconnected to allow load sharing between multiple batteries or charging of multiple batteries from a single charger.

The device has a maximum profile of 1mm and provides a STAT pin to enable an auxiliary p-channel MOSFET power switch when an auxiliary supply is detected or to indicate to a microcontroller that an auxiliary supply is connected.

The LTC4412 is rated for operation over the extended temperature range is priced starting at $1.30 each in 1,000-piece quantities.
