The IR2166 ballast control IC from International Rectifier is positioned to replace a separate ballast control IC, gate driver IC, power factor correction (PFC) IC, and additional discrete circuitry, thereby reducing part count and ballast costs by up to 30 percent.

Integrated with a patent-pending critical-conduction-mode boost PFC control method, the single-chip solution is able to maximize PFC performance by dynamically adapting to the mode of the ballast control.

The company also claims that this method produces a total harmonic distortion of <10 percent and has a power factor >0.99 (120V line voltage), exceeding most countries' regulations as well as the performance of stand-alone PFC ICs.

The IR2166 incorporates a state machine to control the operating sequence of the ballast including undervoltage lockout, preheat, ignition, run and fault modes. It also has a programmable preheat time and frequency to heat the filaments to their correct emission temperature, extending lamp life by more than 30 times and reducing required ignition voltage.

Programmable dead time, preheat and run frequencies are also available to accommodate most lamp types with simple component changes. In addition, the universal 80V to 260V ac mains input capability simplifies circuits for the global market, minimizing the need for region-specific designs.

Protection features undervoltage lockout, soft start, failure to strike, filament failure, overcurrent, end-of-life protection, lamp re-insert auto-restart, as well as dc bus undervoltage reset.

A reference design kit, the IRPLLNR4, is available for a 35W/T5 lamp and universal input (90-260VAC), priced at US$200 each. Ballast design software is available at no charge from the IR Web site.

The IR2166 is available in 16-pin PDIP or SOIC packages and is quoted at $1.92 each in 10,000-unit quantities.
