STMicroelectronics has announced the development of the STE1000P single-chip Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) transceiver chip that consumes 600mW and is targeted for use in PC NICs, LAN on motherboard solutions, uplink ports of switches and routers, and the LAN interface of data-intensive peripherals.

The chip achieves low power consumption through a combination of 0.185m CMOS process technology, and improved circuit design and architecture.

The device improved the implementation of the PMD Viterbi decoder, timing recovery circuit, analog feedforward and adaptive digital gain controls, as well as the low-power adaptive finite impulse response digital filter.

The transceiver is priced at $29 each in sample quantities.
