Optical switch supplier Tellium Inc. announced cutbacks Monday (June 24), including plans to lay off 200 of its 534 employees by the end of June.

Tellium also could write off as much as $165 million from its books, officials said. The write down would relate to the declining market value of items such as goodwill and intangible assets.

Tellium's layoffs follow those of optical networking providers Sycamore Networks Inc. and Ciena Corp., which announced cutbacks last week. Ciena's layoffs were related to the company's acquisition of ONI Systems Inc., which was officially completed Monday. But Sycamore officials cited a need to alter product plans as the telecom recession continues to linger.
