Silicon Labs telephony chipset saves up to 75 percent board space

Silicon Laboratory Inc. has announced the release of the Si3050 two-chip telephony solution that is claimed by the company to provide full feature telephone interface but saves up to 75 percent of board space compared to existing transformer-based solutions.

A member of the company's Direct Access Arrangement family, the chipset is claimed by the company to allow telecom equipment manufacturers to implement more voice channels per card and is programmable to meet global telephone line standards, allowing one solution to be implemented worldwide.

These features make the Si3050 suitable to be used for multi-channel voice products, including PBXs, voice-enabled routers, computer telephony systems, pairgain systems and VoIP applications.

Supporting both PCM/SPI and GCI interfaces, the Si3050 is compatible with the company's Si3220/Si3225 Dual ProSLIC, which provides two-channel analog telephony interfaces for the sourcing side of telephone networks.

The two-chip solution is based on proprietary ISOcap technology and consists of a 16-lead TSSOP line-side and a 20-lead TSSOP system-side device, which are separated by two low-cost, high voltage capacitors eliminating the need for bulky transformers.

It also includes 16 software-selectable ac terminations, 8- or 16-bit voice interface, a programmable hybrid to allow adjustment to real world line conditions, and the ability to gain or attenuate telephone line signals in increments of 0.1dB.

Pricing for the chipset starts at $5.50 in quantities of 10,000. Samples are available now and volume production will begin in the third quarter of 2002. Evaluation boards are available for $175.
