In its "Quarterly Mobile Phone Shipment and Forecast Report" for the second quarter of 2002, DisplaySearch has revealed that mobile phone display shipments rose 3.4 percent Y/Y but were down 10.8 percent sequentially to 91.4 million units. Revenues dropped 13.2 percent Y/Y and 6.6 percent Q/Q to $786 million.

DisplaySearch indicates that monochrome displays continued their sequential shipment and revenue decline, a function of slower growth in undeveloped regions and the shift to color phones for replacements. Color STN display shipments were up for the first time in three quarters to 6.6 million units or an increase of 7.9 percent sequentially. Revenues were flat after three consecutive down quarters. The popularity of the 2-inch 120-by-160mm display with 65,000 colors is driving the recent growth.

Meanwhile, shipments of active-matrix LCDs increased by 17.9 percent sequentially as the 2.2-inch QCIF resolution display, used in flip phones, enjoyed increasing popularity. Revenues were up 2.1 percent sequentially after being down almost 18 percent in the last quarter of 2001.
