ON Semi buck converter delivers up to 91 percent efficiency

Addressing the need for more efficient voltage regulation in cellular basebands and microprocessor cores, the NCP1500 dual-mode PWM buck converter from ON Semiconductor features a linear mode that the company claims reduces noise and quiescent current at low current levels, and a PWM mode that delivers up to 91 percent efficiency for heavy loads.

Designed for use within baseband and DSP circuitry power supplies, the surface-mount device is suitable for such applications as mobile phones, handheld radios, Li-ion battery-powered devices, wireless modems, personal information appliances, portable instruments and distributed power systems.

"Traditional buck regulators continue to plague systems designers with the problem of poor performance under light load conditions," said Laurent Jenck, ON Semiconductor analog portable-power division director. "The inclusion of a low drop-out regulator mode in the NCP1500 optimizes performance with light loads and delivers excellent output noise reduction."

Operating as either a PWM buck converter or a linear regulator, the NCP1500 provides designers with the capability to maximize efficiency at both light and full loads.

The device can supply >300mA to the load and features a current mode control with a cycle-by-cycle current limit to deliver an improved transient response. In PWM mode, the device accepts a synchronization signal between 270kHz and 630kHz.

The company also claims that the NCP1500's LDO mode provides a significantly lower quiescent current and virtually no noise on the output compared to competitive devices that use PFM mode.

With an input voltage range of 2.7V to 5.4V, the device is able to operate directly from a one-cell Li-ion battery or a three-cell NiMH battery.

The NCP1500 also has a built-in slope compensation circuit, shutdown pin, and digitally-programmable voltage selection that allows designers to set the output voltage to 1, 1.3, 1.5 or 1.8V.

The Micro-8-packaged device has a profile of <1.1mm and draws 0.185A during shutdown.
