Xilinx Inc. has announced the IQ series of FPGA and CPLD products that are targeted specifically for the automotive telematics industry.

The solution is claimed by the company to provide faster time-to-market for vehicle manufacturers and allow upgrades to be done even after the vehicle has left the dealership.

Xilinx asserts that new functions can be added to the programmable chips by simply dialing up the vehicle dealership and purchasing the upgrade over the phone. The upgrade can then be sent via a mobile phone link to reconfigure the in-car system.

The solution covers automotive intelligence and infotainment products such as GPS navigation systems, DVD players, and in-cabin digital processing and imaging systems.

The IQ solution consists of Xilinx's FPGAs and CPLDs that meet the industrial temperature range of -400C to 1000C and the extended temperature range of -400C to 1250C. They will also be shipped in lead-free packaging to comply with the European and Japanese regulations.
