Bookham Technology plc is closing its facilities in Maryland, U.S. and Swindon, England, to concentrate on optical component production at its Caswell and Milton, United Kingdom, plants. The company believes these plant closures will reduce costs without adverse impact on manufacturing capacity or on future sales ramp-up.

The company claimed that the Milton site would handle the production of Bookham's application specific optical components with a turnover rate of about #200 million ($305.8 million at $1:#0.654), while active components will be produced at the Caswell site at similar turnover levels.
