Agere Systems' TCMD0110G clock modulator driver chip provides 2ps of typical rms jitter performance, and is targeted at 10Gbps and 12.5Gbps transponder or optical transceivers, SONET/SDH line cards, optical repeaters, and optical test equipment.

The company claims that the IC simplifies transponder/line card design by using a minimum of external components. It has an optional clocking feature which further minimizes jitter transfer and jitter generation.

The device also supports a wide range of output inductances which makes it suited for driving a 10Gbps/12Gbps data signal to either an electro-absorption modulator, lithium niobate (LiNb03) modulator, or direct modulated lasers (DMLs).

The TCMD0110G provides operation up to 12.5Gbps, with complementary outputs and uses a single -5.2V power supply. User-adjustable features include output amplitude (modulation voltage) up to 3V per pin, single and dual-pin pulse width control, and dc output offset up to -1.5V.

In addition, the device's output and crossing point are insensitive to the input amplitude, thus allowing for flexibility in design. The output dc offset is set by applying a voltage to a bias pin, using a voltage source of -5.2V to -3.7V, eliminating the need for an external voltage regulator.

With the dc offset set at -1V, the device can provide an output amplitude of 2.5V per pin, making it well suited for longer-haul applications. Rise and fall times are placed at 28ps.

Available in die and plastic packaged form, the TCMD0110G consumes <130mA of overhead current, and is suitable for operation from 00C to 850C. It is designed for seamless operation with Agere's E2560-series of externally modulated laser.
