Japan-based market research firm Chunichisha reports that worldwide production of lithium batteries grew only 3.7 percent in 2001, totaling 560 million units or %336 billion ($2.6 billion at %128.520:$1). This figure is about 11 percent lower than the 2000 value of %378 billion ($2.9 billion); though production was pegged at only 541 million units that year, prices were much higher then.

According to Chunichisha, the quotes fell as low as %500 ($3.89) per unit in the second half of 2001, and will face further pressure this year from cheap Asian products and downstream electronics assemblers. Demand from mobile phones also slackened for the first time, leading to a single-digit unit production rate.

In terms of key market players, Sanyo Electric is the largest lithium battery supplier in the world, controlling almost 25 percent of the international market, followed by Sony with a 21.2 percent market share. Other major suppliers in the world lithium battery market include Matsushita Battery Ind., Toshiba, NEC Mobile Energy, Hitachi Maxell, Samsung SDI and China-based BYB Battery.
