Tektronix offers wavelength selectable 10Gbps transmission test system

Tektronix Inc. has announced that its OTS9100 series of modular optical test system now offers what is claimed to be the industry's first fully integrated wavelength selectable 10Gbps transmission test system, enabling customers to assemble cost-effective test system configurations that speed the design and production of high-capacity 10Gbps products.

"Previously, 10Gbps transmission testers operated over a single, fixed wavelength. Use in DWDM systems required a complex set of external devices and numerous laser sources," explained said Rick King, VP for Optical Business at Tektronix.

"With the OTS9100 Series the wavelength can be selected. This new capability enables manufacturers to significantly reduce test system cost and test setup time for both design and manufacturing of higher-capacity optical elements for network operators," added King.

The OTS9100 has added an external laser port, which accepts stimulus signals from the OTS9600 Series tunable laser, making it possible to test many wavelengths or channels (as used in DWDM technology) with a single tunable laser, rather than multiple lasers.

In addition to the external laser port, the new optics cards add dual receiver electrical outputs, which permit simultaneous bit error rate testing, jitter analysis, or PHY layer analysis with appropriate instruments, and increased receiver signal sensitivity to provide more reliable measurements at real-world power levels.

The OTS9100 offers flexible testing capabilities designed to concurrently support multiple tests including jitter analysis based on the company's patented Digital Phase Analysis technology, multi-rate transmission test, and swept wavelength measurements.

It is comprised of a 10Gbps SONET/SDH transmitter and receiver, and accepts an input wavelength of 1,290nm to 1,565nm.

The transmitter consists of an OC-192/STM-64 SONET/SDH digital signal generator feeding a 10Gbps fiber-coupled leaser and modulator. It is capable of generating fixed and pseudo-random test patterns mapped into a set of sub-rate payload or full payloads, and can retransmit received 10Gbps signals with or without alarm and error insertion.

The receiver consists of a 10Gbps optical receiver feeding an OC-192/STM-64 digital signal analyzer.
