Hitachi TFT-LCD displays 260,000 colors

Hitachi Ltd has announced the release of the HD66773 TFT-LCD that displays 65,000 colors. Furthermore, through the use of an on-chip dither circuit, the device is capable of displaying up to 260,000 colors.

It supports a 132x176 pixel display sizethe largest class of display screen size for mobile phonesand consumes 3.8mW at a 260,000-color display.

The device has a 9/18-bit interface for 260,000-color display in addition to the 8/16-bit interface for 65,000-color systems. An 8-color display mode for primary color display is provided, allowing the LCD to consume just 0.9mW.

The HDD66773 also incorporates a high-speed burst RAM-write function for writing to RAM, enabling processing at a maximum speed of 160Mbps. This function allows large-volume data writing, such as color image data writing and high-speed display rewriting of RAM data for performing moving image display.

It is mounted using the COG method in which the device is directly mounted face-down on the glass substrate.

The device has a duty cycle from 1/16 to 1/176 and has a logic power supply voltage range of 1.8V to 3.3V.

The HD66773 has a sampling price of about $12.88.
