Worldwide wafer fab equipment spending is showing signs of rebounding, and the market is forecast to show growth from the third quarter of 2001 to the third quarter of 2002, according to Dataquest Inc., a unit of Gartner Inc.

In the third quarter of 2002, worldwide wafer fab equipment spending is projected to reach $5.2 billion, a 5.3 percent increase from the third quarter of 2001. While the market will show year-on-year quarterly growth in the second half of this year, Gartner Dataquest analysts said the year-end totals will still show an overall spending decline.

Further, Dataquest projects worldwide wafer fab equipment spending to total $18.9 billion, a 20 percent decline from 2001 revenue of $23.7 billion. Worldwide semiconductor capital spending is on pace to reach $35.3 billion in 2002, a 20.9 percent decline from 2001 revenue of $44.6 billion.

Worldwide semiconductor capital spending is forecast to reach $47.3 billion in 2003, a 34 percent increase from 2002, while wafer fab equipment spending will total $26.9 billion, a 42.1 percent increase. Given the fact that the industry will enter 2003 significantly underinvested and that the demand outlook more promising, next year will be a positive year for the industry, Dataquest concludes.
