The PC industry is said to be currently experiencing a minor setback, as worldwide PC shipments in the second quarter of 2002 declined by 0.6 percent from the same period last year, according to preliminary results from a study of Dataquest Inc., a unit of Gartner Inc.

Dataquest further reports that worldwide PC shipments totaled to 29.9 million units in the second quarter of 2002, with 10.6 million units of the shipments belonging to the U.S., a 0.8 percent decline from the previous year.

The decline was attributed by Dataquest as the market seeing the effects of inventory overhang from the first quarter of 2002. However, the industry has yet to anticipate any significant returns to corporate and consumer market buying, which Dataquest reports to have fallen back further in some regions. Charles Smulders, VP of Gartner Dataquest's Computing Platforms Worldwide group says that economic uncertainty continues to undermine business confidence, which was further compounded in the U.S. by the Enron and WorldCom MCI accounting scandals.

Meanwhile, the EMEA region experienced a slight shipment decline of 0.3 percent in the second quarter, while Japan dropped 12 percent. Asia/Pacific and Latin America, on the other hand, showed growth rates of five and 4.3 percent, respectively. Dataquest analysts said that the excitement over the World Cup soccer tournament, in some degree, impacted some retail sales in the said regions as some consumers focused on the games instead of buying PCs.
