West Bay Semiconductor Inc., a Canada-based fabless semiconductor company that designs ICs for optical communications network systems, has announced that it will supply advanced chip for next-generation SDH/SONET to Groupe Sagem, a $3 billion international technology conglomerate.

"West Bay has now moved from pure start-up to a more advanced stage with its solutions being picked up over products by more established vendors," said Tino Varelas, president & CEO of West Bay. "We shall start supplying the chip in 2003 Q2. This deal with generate over $10 million in five years."

The chip, which targets next-generation SONET/SDH and Multi-Service Provisioning Platform (MSPP) equipment, features deep channelization, high-capacity switching, and high-speed interface technologies, and enables simultaneous, real-time processing of thousands of voice and data streams.

"There are two reasons mainly contributing to our success," explained Varelas. "The company has an in-depth experience of SDH marketplace, and West Bay's IP enables the design of chips using fewer transistors per port. This translates into higher density devices at the right power and price."

West Bay primary markets are China and South Korea. "Now we are also looking at Taiwan," said Varelas. "We plan to develop local presence here. In future, we shall expand to Japan also."
