The DS2720 single-cell Li-ion battery protection IC integrates a regulated charge pump to enable control of n-channel MOSFETs that provide low impedance as battery cell voltages deplete, increasing battery run time.

Designed to protect the battery from overvoltage, undervoltage, overcurrent, or overtemperature conditions, the IC also enables the host system to control the power MOSFETS from either a data communication interface or a dedicated input, thereby eliminating the power-switch redundancy of Li-ion battery systems.

A 1-Wire communication interface is provided to give the host system R/W access to status and control registers, instrumentation registers, and general-purpose lockable EEPROM.

The IC also supports multiple battery operation, given that each device has a unique 64-bit ROM lasered serial number and can be individually addressed on the same serial bus.

The DS2720 is available in an 8-pin microSOP casing and is typically used in hand-held wireless products such as PDAs, mobile phones, and digital cameras. Prices start at $1.18 (1000-up).
