Motorola Inc.'s C-5e network processor will be used in Alcatel's next-generation wireless infrastructure equipment to help connect wireless networks into ATM networks and PSTN.

Alcatel's infrastructure equipment, referred to as the serving GPRS support node (SGSN), will be designed to support packet-based mobile networks including GPRS and 3G UMTS. The SGSN is expected to provide wireless customers with faster access to data networks and more extensive Internet services.

"We found the level and ease of programmability of the C-5e network processor to meet our requirements for wireless infrastructure products," said Martine Lapierre, CTO of Alcatel Carrier Networking Group. "We will be able to support the protocols and interfaces our customers need and easily upgrade products in the future through software downloads as protocols and technologies evolve," he added.
