Mitsubishi Electric Corp. has developed a software program that will cut the cost and time of automakers in developing and customizing vehicle navigation systems.

According to Mitsubishi, the navigation operating system can cost millions of dollars because of the high man-hour volume required to program and code every aspect of the system. It is from these OS that automakers customize in-vehicle navigation offerings, such as adding or changing voice prompts or background colors. Mitsubishi adds that in each revision costs increase up to 10 percent of the original system development cost.

To address this problem, Mitsubishi's patented software tool called Victoria separates the existing navigation program into modules and automatically writes new software from these modules. If changes were required, only the modules are affected, not the entire system.
