Matsushita DV codec incorporates IEEE 1394 link layer

Matsushita Electric Ind. Co. Ltd has developed a digital video (DV) codec with built-in encoding and decoding formats that are fully-compatible with the IEEE 1394 link layer and DV format, making it suitable for multiple protocols and simplifying digital connections between video cameras and MPEG-2 recording devices.

The LSI decodes video and voice signals recorded in DV format, and encodes them directly into MPEG-2 format.

Previous devices required multiple chips to handle IEEE 1394, DV codec processing, and DRAM functions. The new DV codec LSI is built around a core consisting of DV codec processing and IEEE 1394 link layer circuitry.

The company also added protocol processing circuitry that supports simultaneous bidirectional data transfer in MPEG-2 and DV format, and DTCP copy protection circuitry.

Samples of the new DV codec LSI with built-in IEEE 1394 link layer will be available in the Japanese market in August at an estimated price of $33.42.
