The LCD panel industry in Taiwan is anticipated to reach 12.2 million in production volume by Q2 of 2002, a slight dip from the 12.25 million units produced in Q1, according to the latest report from Market Intelligence Center (MIC), a Taiwan-based IT research and consultancy firm.

Analyst Sean Wu, MIC senior analyst says Taiwan LCD panel makers have reached full capacity in their 4G plants during the Q1 of 2002, leaving no room for further growth in the Q2 of the year. Taiwan makers are also shifting their production from 15-inch panels to 17-inch panels. Wu notes that although a smaller number of 17-inch panels can be cut from one mother glass, its price still exceeds a 15-inch panel.

Further, MIC explains that another reason the industry is forecasted for slow growth in Q2 of 2002 is the opening of 5G manufacturing plants in South Korea. With this, the local LCD panel industry's share in the market is projected to decrease to about 35 percent in 2003, after reaching 38 percent in 2002.
