The Dell'Oro Group recently delivered a five-year forecast on the worldwide optical transport market showing continued decline of the industry through 2004, before resuming modest growth in 2005. The report predicts 2004 sales of $8.1 Billion, down by 65 percent from the $23 billion peak in 2000.

"Service Provider Capex is forecasted to remain under pressure until 2004," said Jimmy Yu, an analyst at Dell'Oro. "Optical equipment sales continue to be squeezed by the difficulties facing the telecom industry. But even within the declining optical market, we see some strong growth segments. We see the DWDM metro, SONET/SDH multiservice, and optical switch market segments resuming growth in 2003 and 2004, to meet either new service requirements or as technology replacements."
