Goal Semiconductor's latest Versa-series SoC has a single-cycle 8051 RISC processor that's claimed to provide an average of eight times more processing power than a standard 8051 microcontroller.

With the aid of on-chip analog peripherals, the VMX1020 can function as a complete data acquisition SoC, the company claimed.

The device integrates a hardware MAC and a 32-bit barrel shifter that together can effectively implement complex 16-bit and 32-bit DSP operations, the company said. Other features include a large, 56KB block of in-circuit reprogrammable Flash memory, and 1,280 bytes of RAM.

The device's four-channel, 12-bit ADC can operate in single-shot, automatic, or continuous-conversion mode with periodic interrupts to the processor. The ADC also includes a feature that allows sequential conversion of the four channels automatically.

DACs can be implemented by filtering the outputs of the PWMs. A bandgap provides voltage reference to the ADC and current source.

There is also a complete set of communication interfaces as well as two configurable serial UARTs with dedicated baud-rate generators and a differential RS-485/RS-422 transceiver. The device's SPI is a fully configurable master/slave interface. Up to four devices can be addressed in master mode.

Available in 64-pin, 52-pin, and 44-pin QFPs, the devices are aimed at intelligent sensor-based systems and can also serve industrial, medical, consumer, instrumentation, and automotive applications. Versa Mix devices are priced at $6.58 apiece in quantities of 1,000.
