The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) reported that quarterly sales have increased by 5.8 percent to $11.35 billion in the June quarter (Q2), from $10.73 billion in the March quarter (Q1) of this year. According to George Scalise, SIA president, while the computer and computer-related sector demand is lagging, the wireless and consumer sectors continue to strengthen, which in effect stimulates strong sales in Flash, DSPs, application specific products, discrete devices, and analog. All of which, Scalise noted, increased by double-digit rates in Q2.

SIA further reports that in June, growth in the digital consumer sector led the sales increase in Japan, while the Asia/Pacific markets continue to benefit from outsourcing for board level and box manufacturing, which is especially strong in China. Further, sales in the Americas were affected by the slow recovery in the PC markets, while the shake out and restructuring of the telecom markets, in addition to a slow PC market had a short-term effect on revenues in Europe.

Additionally, SIA released its mid-year market forecast providing an overview of an industry-wide recovery that is currently under way. Sales in 2002 are expected to result in about 3 percent growth from 2001, which SIA expects to follow through 2003 and 2004, with a 23.2 and 20.9 percent increase, respectively, with wireless and digital consumer products leading the growth of sales.
