Targeted for both portable and STB applications, the 5PD61151 and 5PD61152 MPEG2 A/V codecs from NEC Electronics Inc. typically consume 330mW at 1.5V - 70 percent lower than the company's previous MPEG2 encoder products.

The single-chip solutions integrate an audio encoder, video encoder, and a V850 32-bit MCU into a 15-by-15mm, 273-pin PBGA package. They also feature a PCI Rev 2.1 host bus interface to ease system design by enabling designers to run a transport or program stream to the hard drive over the PCI bus instead of the local bus.

Both devices also support SDRAM devices with 2.5V I/Os and feature A/V playback capabilities. They support most audio compression algorithms including MP3, WMA, and AAC. The 5PD61152 additionally supports the Dolby Digital format.

Pricing for the 5PD61151 and 5PD61152 MPEG2 devices is $19 in 10,000-unit quantities.
