In a move involving PCB tools suppliers, privately-held Electronics Workbench has purchased the autoplacement and autorouting technology of Bartels System GmbH.

Prior to the purchase, Toronto-based Electronics Workbench had an OEM agreement under which it offered Bartels System's autorouting product in North America by bundling them with its own front end tools. Bartels, based in Germany, had OEM agreements with other EDA suppliers for its autorouting technology. Now Electronics Workbench owns the source code to the autorouter, which is unique in combining both grid-based and shape-based routing, the companies said.

Electronics Workbench said it is planning to use the autorouter technology as the foundation of its next-generation solutions targeting mainstream and advanced PCB designs.
