The Fabless Semiconductor Association's quarterly Wafer Demand Survey conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP has noted a 9 percent increase in actual wafer demand for Q2 2002 compared to the 3 percent increase forecasted in Q1 2002.

Although the results of the survey suggests an immediate comeback for the wafer industry, the 9 percent quarter-over-quarter (Q-o-Q) increase, which was only 88 percent of the previous forecast, indicates that recovery will be moderate and gradual with considerable individual company variability. Overall, the returning respondents from the 2002 annual survey (fabless and IDMs) expect steady Q-o-Q wafer demand increases in the remainder of 2002 and 1H of 2003.

Despite the expected steady increases over the four quarters subsequent to Q2 2002, the respondents have lowered their forecast growth in wafer demand for the remainder of 2002 and all of 2003. Unanticipated change in market demand is the most frequent reason for these revisions, followed by design or development delays.

The returning respondents from the 2002 annual survey now expect their annual wafer demand to increase by 27 and 38 percent in 2002 and 2003, respectively while returning fabless respondents are expecting significantly higher increases in wafer demand, compared to returning IDM respondents. Survey responses for the Q2 2002 survey were received from 105 companies, including 71 returning respondents from the 2002 annual survey.
