Toshiba Corp. has introduced the TC81240TB LSI that integrates the company's upgraded versions of CPU, MPEG2 decoder, graphics IC, into a single-chip solution targeted at the back-end system of DTVs.

The 648-ball TBGA device processes signals compressed by MPEG2 technology and reproduces high-definition motion pictures and sound. Built-in interfaces, including USB, support connection to other digital consumer products.

It has a 64-bit, MIPS-based CPU operating at 230MIPS, 200MHz - an upgrade from the previous 32-bit, 133MHz CPU. A second CPU, developed with Toshiba's Media embedded Processor (MeP) technology, is also integrated to control MPEG-2 decoding. The LSI has the capability to simultaneously decode two HD channels.

Memory interface that supports up to 512MB of 100MHz and 133MHz DDR-SDRAM. Also included are six DACs (three for main channels, three for VCR) for video decoding, and a DSP for audio, AAC, and AC3 decoding.

The device supports the BS digital broadcasting, 110 CS digital broadcasting, and digital terrestrial broadcasting in Japan and in the U.S.
