Touted to be the industry's largest and fastest programmable IC, the XC2V8000 Virtex-II FPGA from Xilinx Inc. integrates 8 million gates with clock speeds of over 400MHz, and I/O speeds of 840Mbps.

The device is claimed to be 73 percent larger than competing devices and also includes 104,832 logic cells, >3Mb of block RAM, 12 Digital Clock Managers (DCMs), 168 18-by-18 multipliers, and 824 I/O pins, including 412 differential I/O pairs.

These features allow the FPGA to handle large data streams in terabit and pedabit routers, network port aggregation, and high-end broadcast equipment video imaging and computer graphics systems.

The XC2V8000 is manufactured using an advanced 0.155m CMOS process jointly developed with United Microelectronics Corp. The device is priced at $3,960 in volumes of 10,000 units.
