SMK Corp. has developed a power-free, dot-matrix LCD that allows images to be displayed onto the panel until commands are received, without the need of a power supply. The device uses chloesteric liquid crystals to achieve this effect.

Suitable for use as price displays, and advertisement and bulletin boards, the LCD measures 397-by-172.5-by-36mm with a display area of 289-by-36mm. It has a 512x64 dot resolution and can display graphic images in blue or black with a cyan or green background, respectively.

The LCD functions from a 4.5V source and weighs about 1kg.

Included with the LCD are content registration software, PC adapter, and a handheld terminal that allows transfer of data from a PC to the LCD at a rate of 19.2Kbps over a distance of up to 5m via infrared.
