Looking to add some power to its RF offerings, Sirenza Microdevices has signed a pact with Xemod, under which Sirenza will acquire the RF power amplifier manufacturer for about $4.5 million in cash.

Xemod has been going head-to-head with Motorola, Ericsson, Philips, and a host of other companies in the high-power power amplifier space for wireless basestation equipment. Like the others, the company developed power amplifier modules using laterally diffused metal-oxide semiconductor (LDMOS) transistor technology. Target applications for Xemod include cellular and PCS basestations.

Through the acquisition, Sirenza will add LDMOS technology to an RF line that already includes AlGaAs/GaAs FETs and GaAs HBT power amplifier devices for the basestation market. The company will also bring over technical talent from the Xemod team. Joseph Johnson, current president and CEO of Xemod, will take over as CTO of Sirenza while Richard Clark, Xemod's vice president of marketing, will become the general manager of Sirenza's Integrated Power business unit.

Sirenza expects the acquisition to be completed in September of October 2002. The acquisition has been approved by the board of directors of each company.
