Targeted for use in STB and DTV applications, the 5PD61120 SoC A/V decoder solution from NEC Corp. features dual 32-bit MIPS processors and offers decoding support for Dolby Digital and MP3 audio formats.

The A/V decoder is also software upgradeable, allowing OEMs to easily update application support in the field via the SoC's integrated soft modem.

Traditional STBs based on single processor designs are claimed to have a limited performance since a single processor must simultaneously support both the OS and the decoding of A/V streams.

NEC's solution devotes one processor to support the OS and the other to support real-time A/V decoding. The company claims that this arrangement significantly improves processing performance, enhances graphics quality, and provides the ability to support more audio standards compared to competing solutions.

Manufactured using the company's 0.135m process, the SoC has 225MIPS performance at 187MHz. It has a 1.5V core, 3.3V interfaces, and provides Unified Memory Architecture for DDR SDRAM. Interfaces include serial or parallel streams and an IEEE 1394 data port.

The 5PD61120 is available in a 272-pin PBGA package and is priced at $30 in 10,000-unit quantities.
