Timing modules offer end-to-end net solution

TeraSync Inc. has expanded its ATiMe timing product family to include the ATiMe-3S, for Stratum 3/3E, SEC or SMC timing and synchronization.

The unit provides an end-to-end solution for network element central timing; hierarchical reference source distribution and management between the network element and the network; and high-frequency optical interface clock distribution and timing, according to the company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of TeraSync Ltd.

Measuring 50.8-by-50.8-by-12.7mm, the solution supports three modes of operation: free-run, holdover, and locked (to one of the reference inputs). The default input reference frequency is 8kHz; other inputs are available on request.

The ATiMe-3S module offers a range of output OC-N and PDH-based frequencies, including 19.44MHz, 38.88MHz, and 77.76MHz, or any other predetermined choice up to 77.76MHz. The module supports 3.3V or 5V dc operation. The operating temperature range is 00C to 600C.

"We enable the equipment manufacturers to focus on their core competencies and mission and not on 'niche' fields such as timing and synchronization. That enables them to bring their products to market faster and saves them substantial development time," said Aran Ariel, director of sales for TeraSync. "In addition, when timing and synchronization are outsourced, the modules provide a substantial cost reduction for telecommunications equipment manufacturers."

Based on customer requirements, the off-the-shelf, modular DSP-based digital PLL synchronization unit features high accuracy and reliability as well as feature-rich functionality in a compact module for core and access IP switches, cross-connects, DWDM, SONET/SDH, and transmission products, TeraSync said.

The module complies with Telcordia GR-1244-Core for Stratum 3E specs and ITU-T G.812 Type III recommendations. Key features include free-run accuracy within 14.6ppm (as the basic option) and a default pull-in range of 29ppm or 11ppm. Selective pull-in and hysteresis ranges are available per GR-253 and/or GR-1244.

Additional performance features such as input reference frequency and DPLL are user-selectable on request.

In quantities of 10,000, the ATiMe-3S modules are priced at $300 for Stratum-3, $600 for Stratum-3E, and $260 for SEC and SMC. Lead times are from two to 12 weeks, depending on order quantity.
