Webserver-i (eZ80-L92), the second product in ZiLOG Inc.'s eZ80 microprocessor series, features TCP/IP and IrDA software for applications that can be managed remotely from an Internet browser on a handheld device, cellphone, or PC.

Norman Sheridan, SVP of system development, said the 50MHz, Z80- and Z180-compatible device, priced at $5.72 in lots of 1,000, offers 16MB of memory address space, a full IP stack and an Ethernet reference design.

A development kit allows engineers with no previous Internet experience to Web-enable their applications in as little as 48h, the company said. Initially, Zilog's Webserver Software Suite will require external memory. Versions with on-chip memory are in development.

Based on a pipeline architecture, the MPU includes an IrDA-compatible infrared encoder/decoder, power-management features, general-purpose port pins, serial ports, an SPI port, and an I2C port.

Sheridan said the eZ80 architecture enables the processors to run up to 16x faster than Z80 MPUs while occupying a quarter of the space and consuming less than half the power.

The device can address 16MB without a MMU. It also performs 24-bit arithmetic.
